Australia secured the five-match T20 International series against the West Indies with a dramatic victory in the fourth match held at Warner Park in Basseterre on October 7, 2023. The Australian team chased down a formidable target of 206 runs, concluding the match in the final over thanks to an unbeaten half-century from Cameron Green and explosive contributions from Glenn Maxwell and Josh Inglis.

The West Indies got off to a strong start after Australia elected to field first, but their innings took a turn as they lost three wickets for just 42 runs during the Powerplay. Contributions from Sherfane Rutherford, Rovman Powell, Shimron Hetmyer, Romario Shepherd, and Jason Holder helped the team post a total of 205 runs, finishing their innings at 205 for 9.

Australia faced a setback early in their chase, losing Mitchell Marsh in the first over. However, a 66-run partnership between Maxwell and Inglis set the stage for a successful run chase. Despite losing quick wickets after the tenth over, Green’s composed innings ensured Australia reached their target in 19.2 overs, finishing with three wickets in hand.

Key Performers Drive Australia’s Success

Inglis led the charge with a rapid 51 runs off just 30 balls, which included 10 fours and one six. This performance marked his second half-century of the series. His impressive scoring has propelled him to a total of 868 T20I runs at a strike rate of 164.70. Maxwell also provided crucial support, scoring 47 runs from only 18 deliveries, featuring one four and six sixes. Maxwell’s career T20I tally now stands at 2,754 runs with a strike rate of 156.12.

Green’s innings, which concluded at 55 runs off 35 balls, was particularly noteworthy. It marked his third half-century in the series, with his scores reading 55*, 11, 56*, and 51. Overall, this was his sixth T20I fifty, and he now has 436 runs in 17 matches at a strike rate of 156.27.

Australia’s bowling attack played a pivotal role in restricting the West Indies. Both Aaron Hardie and Xavier Bartlett took two wickets each, while Nathan Ellis was exceptional, conceding only 21 runs in four overs. Adam Zampa and Sean Abbott also contributed to the West Indies’ struggles, claiming five wickets between them, although Abbott allowed 61 runs in his four overs.

A unique statistic emerged from this match, as the West Indies became the first team in T20I history to score over 200 runs without a single player exceeding 34 runs. Rutherford topped the West Indies’ scoring with a mere 31 runs, hitting four fours and two sixes during his brief stay at the crease.

Australia’s victory in this match marks their fourth consecutive win in the series, demonstrating their dominance over the West Indies in this format of the game. The final match of the series promises to be an exciting conclusion as both teams look to make their mark.
