Aston Villa’s Emery Praises Rogers After Key Goal Against Spurs
Aston Villa secured a vital victory against Tottenham Hotspur on March 31, 2024, with a standout performance from midfielder Morgan Rogers. After a challenging start to the season, Rogers scored his first goal for Villa in 20 matches across all competitions, helping his team to a 2-1 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Rogers’ impressive showing followed a successful international break, where he played a key role in England’s 3-0 victory over Wales. Villa’s manager, Unai Emery, expressed confidence that Rogers’ positive momentum would translate into consistent domestic performances.
Emery Recognizes Rogers’ Hard Work
Following the match, Emery praised Rogers for his dedication and hard work. “Always he is doing his task; he is a hard worker,” Emery stated during the post-match news conference. He emphasized that Rogers’ individual performance was a result of his relentless effort and commitment to the team.
Emery added, “Morgan, especially, did the same progression because he was working. Sometimes we can play brilliantly and sometimes not, but always we have to work.” He acknowledged that while the team may face challenges, Rogers’ contributions were critical, noting the midfielder’s physical capacity to maintain intensity throughout the game.
Rogers’ goal was part of a comeback for Villa, which also featured a decisive strike from Emiliano Buendía, who scored the winning goal after a tough period in Birmingham. Emery reflected on Buendía’s journey at Villa, highlighting how injuries had previously hindered his performance. “His skill is clear; he has the ability to make the difference,” he said, expressing satisfaction with Buendía’s current form.
Watkins’ Impact and Team Dynamics
In addition to Rogers and Buendía, striker Ollie Watkins played a significant role in the match, coming on in the second half after recovering from a knock sustained during international play. Emery was impressed with Watkins’ performance, noting, “Today, Watkins played 30 minutes fantastically. He didn’t score but played very well, and we were attacking for him.”
The victory against Tottenham marks an important moment for Aston Villa as they look to build on this success. With key players like Rogers, Buendía, and Watkins contributing positively, the team is poised for further progress in the coming matches.
As Aston Villa continues its campaign, Emery’s leadership and the players’ hard work could prove essential for the club’s aspirations this season.
