Afghanistan Triumphs Over Hong Kong by 94 Runs in Asia Cup Opener

Afghanistan secured a commanding victory over Hong Kong, winning by 94 runs in the opening match of the Asia Cup T20 2025 held in Abu Dhabi on September 9. Captain Rashid Khan highlighted the effectiveness of Afghanistan’s spin attack, which played a crucial role in restricting the inexperienced Hong Kong team to just 94 runs for the loss of nine wickets.
The match saw Afghanistan setting a challenging total, which proved insurmountable for Hong Kong. Despite efforts from Babar Hayat, who scored 39 runs, and captain Yasim Murtaza with 16 runs, the Hong Kong batting lineup struggled to cope with the pressure exerted by Afghanistan’s bowlers. Rashid, along with fellow spinners Noor Ahmad and A.M. Ghazanfar, limited runs to 44 in 10 overs, each contributing significantly to the tight bowling performance.
Rashid emphasized the strategic advantage of having strong spinners in the team. He stated, “If you have good spinners, it puts extra pressure. If you have runs on the board… with batters trying to take risks, that is where you are more effective.” He also acknowledged the tough decision to leave out star off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman, noting the depth of talent in the squad.
Outstanding Performance by Omarzai
The Player of the Match award went to Azmatullah Omarzai, who made a remarkable impact by scoring Afghanistan’s fastest T20 half-century in just 20 balls, hitting five sixes in the process. Omarzai credited the team’s management for their unwavering belief in him. He mentioned, “It is very tough batting in the lower order, (it’s) all about belief. The captain and coach have belief in me; I was trying to back myself.”
Omarzai’s innings was crucial, especially after Afghanistan lost early wickets. He shared his strategy with teammate Sediqullah, aiming to stabilize the innings before targeting boundaries in the later overs.
Hong Kong’s Experience and Future Outlook
On the other side, losing captain Yasim Murtaza expressed his admiration for the opportunity to compete against a strong team like Afghanistan. He described the experience as “like a dream come true” and acknowledged the significance of the Asia Cup as a major tournament in the region. Murtaza stated, “I was not expecting that total on the board. Credit goes to their batters, especially Omarzai, getting 50 off 20 balls – that is a game-changer.”
Despite the defeat, Murtaza found positives in the match, highlighting Babar’s performance and the effectiveness of their spinners. He concluded by stating that the team has valuable lessons to take away from this match to improve in future games.
Afghanistan’s victory sets a strong tone for the tournament, showcasing their formidable bowling lineup and batting depth. As the Asia Cup progresses, both teams will look to build on their experiences, with Afghanistan aiming to continue their momentum and Hong Kong seeking to learn and grow from their challenges.
