Dr. Mohana Krishna Reddy Mudiam, Director of the Institute of Pesticide Formulation Technology (IPFT) in Gurugram, highlighted the crucial role of science in agricultural practices during a lecture at the 11th India International Science Festival (IISF-2025) on March 15, 2025. Speaking as the chief guest, Mudiam addressed the audience on the topic “Lab to Land: Agrochemicals for Sustainable Agriculture,” organized by CSIR-NEERI in collaboration with Vigyan Bharati (VIBHA) Vidarbha Pradesh Mandal.

He provided insights on the development and distribution of agrochemicals, explaining how they can impact the food chain through residues. Mudiam traced the evolution of pesticides, from elemental sulphur to modern synthetic and biopesticides, emphasizing the shift towards eco-friendly formulations derived from natural extracts. His remarks underscored the importance of sustainable practices in agriculture.

Innovation and Sustainability in Agriculture

The event took place at the NEERI auditorium, with notable attendees including Dr. S. Venkata Mohan, Director of CSIR-NEERI, and various other officials from VIBHA Vidarbha. In his opening address, Dr. Venkata Mohan discussed NEERI’s role in the upcoming thematic event focused on the circular economy at IISF-2025. He referred to a study published in *Nature*, stating that human-made materials now surpass global biomass, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable economic models.

With projections indicating that nearly 70% of the global population will reside in urban areas by 2050, Dr. Venkata Mohan emphasized the necessity of transitioning from linear to circular economic models. He also showcased NEERI’s contributions to both industry and society, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to environmental science.

The event engaged a total of 332 students from seven schools in Nagpur and the surrounding Vidarbha region. Participants visited NEERI’s laboratories and the Harit Sangrahalaya, where they were introduced to key research and development activities. The interactive sessions allowed students to engage directly with scientists on topics related to environmental science and engineering.
