Jack Dorsey Launches BitChat, a Bluetooth Messaging App

Jack Dorsey, the former CEO of Twitter, has launched a new Bluetooth messaging application called BitChat. The app is now available for download on the Apple App Store and is designed for seamless offline communication. It allows users to connect and chat with others nearby without relying on WiFi or cellular networks.

The development of BitChat was reportedly completed over a weekend in early July 2023. It features a minimalistic interface with no login requirements. Users can simply download the app, set a display name, and begin messaging those within their Bluetooth range, which extends approximately 100 meters.

How BitChat Works

BitChat operates by establishing encrypted communication between nearby devices. When users move, their smartphones automatically form local Bluetooth clusters, relaying messages from device to device. This process allows messages to reach peers within the standard Bluetooth range without the necessity of a traditional network connection.

Bridge devices play a crucial role in expanding this mesh network. They connect overlapping clusters, enabling communication over greater distances. Notably, messages are stored solely on individual devices and are not retained on a centralized infrastructure, aligning with Dorsey’s advocacy for decentralization, as seen in his support for platforms like Bluesky and Damus.

Features and Functionality

BitChat is especially useful in areas with limited or no internet connectivity. The app supports group chats, allowing users to create rooms named with hashtags and secured with passwords. Additionally, it incorporates a “store and forward” feature, ensuring that messages reach users who may be temporarily offline.
