IIT Delhi Unveils Mosquito-Repellent Detergents for Fabrics

A research team at IIT Delhi has introduced a groundbreaking line of mosquito-repellent detergents that can effectively protect fabrics from mosquitoes. Led by Professor Javed Nabibaksha Sheikh from the Department of Textile and Fibre Engineering, these innovative products are available in both powder and liquid forms and promise durable protection without compromising the wash-care qualities of textiles.

Addressing Current Limitations

The research team identified significant limitations in existing mosquito protection products. Common options such as lotions, sprays, and coils often fail to provide consistent protection. For instance, topical formulations can lose efficacy over time, increasing the risk of bites and the transmission of dangerous diseases.

“Our goal was to create a solution that not only protects individuals but also maintains the quality of the fabrics,” said Professor Sheikh. The newly developed detergents achieve this by making washed fabrics unattractive to mosquitoes, thereby preventing bites.

Development Process and Testing

The mosquito-repellent detergents underwent rigorous testing in a commercial laboratory. The research involved a unique “hand-in-cage” method, where volunteers placed their hands, covered with fabrics washed in the new detergents, into an enclosure with starved mosquitoes. Results showed a significant reduction in mosquito landings on the treated fabrics, confirming the effectiveness of the product.

Professor Sheikh expressed enthusiasm about the findings, stating, “The products have proven effective at repelling mosquitoes. Our smart detergents are a step towards protecting people from the threats posed by mosquito-borne diseases.”

The active components in the detergents interact with the fabric fibers during the washing process. This interaction makes the treated textiles less appealing to mosquitoes by targeting their smell and taste sensors.

Long-Lasting Protection

Another noteworthy aspect of these detergents is their durability. Since fabrics are frequently washed, the mosquito-repellent properties are replenished with each wash. Professor Sheikh emphasized that the ongoing protection ensures both efficiency and longevity, making these detergents a practical choice for consumers.

The research team has also taken steps to secure intellectual property rights for their innovative product, having filed a patent application for the mosquito-repellent detergents. This move reflects their commitment to furthering research in textile protection and public health.
