Google Launches Project Suncatcher to Create AI Data Centres in Space
Google has initiated an ambitious endeavor known as Project Suncatcher, aiming to establish solar-powered AI data centres in space. This innovative project envisions the deployment of a constellation of satellites equipped with Google’s advanced AI chips, known as tensor processing units, which will operate in low-earth orbit.
The core idea behind Project Suncatcher is to create a network of interconnected satellites that can function as a powerful AI data centre beyond the confines of Earth. According to a blog post on The Keyword, these satellites will harness solar energy to operate continuously, significantly enhancing their productivity. In fact, Google states that, in the right orbital position, a solar panel can be up to eight times more effective than those on the ground, allowing for almost uninterrupted power generation and reducing reliance on batteries.
Partnership with Planet Labs
To bring this vision to life, Google is collaborating with satellite manufacturer Planet Labs. The partnership aims to launch two prototype satellites by early 2027. These prototypes will serve as the first step in testing the necessary hardware in space, paving the way for future iterations that could eventually form the backbone of a larger AI infrastructure.
