Chinese Scientists Develop ‘Bone Glue’ to Heal Fractures in Minutes

Chinese researchers have introduced a revolutionary medical adhesive named Bone-02, capable of repairing bone fractures in as little as three minutes. This innovation, led by Dr. Lin Xianfeng at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital in Zhejiang Province, has the potential to significantly change the landscape of orthopedic surgery.

The creation of Bone-02 is inspired by the natural adhesive properties of oysters, which can adhere securely to wet surfaces. Unlike traditional metal implants, this bioabsorbable adhesive dissolves gradually as the bone heals, thus eliminating the need for a second surgery to remove any hardware.

Rapid Healing and Strong Bonding

Clinical trials involving over 150 patients have showcased Bone-02’s strength and safety, demonstrating its ability to bond quickly even in blood-rich environments. Within two to three minutes of application, the adhesive secures broken bones with a bonding force exceeding 400 pounds. This efficiency not only reduces the duration of surgeries but also minimizes the risks of infection and accelerates recovery times for patients.

The adhesive exhibits impressive physical properties, including a shear strength of 0.5 MPa and a compressive strength of around 10 MPa, comparable to standard implants used in orthopedic procedures. Notably, Bone-02 was well tolerated by patients, with no major safety concerns reported during trials.

Bone-02’s bioabsorbable design allows it to dissolve completely within approximately six months, as the bone regains its strength. This feature not only reduces costs associated with a second surgery but also lowers recovery risks.
