Alliance University Workshop Explores Hydrogen Fuel’s Future

Alliance University in Bengaluru hosted a significant national workshop focused on the potential of hydrogen fuel technologies and future trends. The event, held on September 19, gathered experts and dignitaries, including Dr. V Narayanan, chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), who served as the chief guest. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science and aimed to foster discussions on hydrogen’s applications in various sectors, particularly in India’s energy landscape.

Key Insights on Hydrogen Technologies

During the workshop, Dr. V Narayanan emphasized hydrogen’s transformative role in India’s space missions, transportation, and clean energy sectors. He stated, “The world today faces twin challenges: the growing demand for energy and the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In this context, hydrogen, one of the greenest and cleanest fuels available to us, is a beacon of hope.” He highlighted that hydrogen has been integral to several recent breakthroughs at ISRO, including the successful launch of the GSLV Mk III rocket, which utilized a cryogenic stage powered by liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen.

Dr. Narayanan mentioned that hydrogen has broader applications beyond space technology. It is increasingly being explored for use in aircraft, trains, and automobiles. He referenced a collaboration between ISRO and Tata Motors, which led to the development of a hydrogen fuel cell-powered bus that successfully underwent tests. He noted the recent introduction of five hydrogen-powered buses into commercial operation in June 2025, showcasing advancements in this area.

Despite the promising advancements, Dr. Narayanan cautioned about the safety risks associated with hydrogen. He noted, “Hydrogen flames are colourless and dangerous. We must never ignore the safety risks: with vast hydrogen facilities, the scale of potential danger is real.” He called for the development of better hydrogen sensors to enhance safety measures in handling hydrogen.

Advancements and Future Directions

Abhay G Chebbi, pro-chancellor of Alliance University, echoed the sentiments about hydrogen’s role as a clean and versatile energy carrier. He stated, “Hydrogen is rapidly emerging as a clean, efficient, and versatile energy carrier, capturing global attention for its transformative potential in powering a sustainable future.” Chebbi emphasized that with only less than 1% of global hydrogen production coming from renewable sources, workshops like this are essential for bridging the gap between current possibilities and practical applications.

Dr. N Kalaiselvi, director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), highlighted the importance of hydrogen research for enhancing India’s global competitiveness. She stated, “Hydrogen is more than an element. It is a catalyst, a fuel, and a bridge between fossil fuels and renewable energy.” Dr. Kalaiselvi stressed the need for breakthroughs in production, storage, and application technologies to position India as a leader in this field.

Dr. Vijay Kumar Saraswat, chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CIIS) and a member of NITI Aayog, reinforced the call for a robust hydrogen economy. He noted that accelerating India’s journey towards a hydrogen economy is essential for achieving net-zero ambitions. He added, “While we have demonstrated capability in producing methanol and hydrogen from high-ash coal gasification, critical gaps remain in electrolyzers, storage systems, compressors, and fuel cells—areas where India is still dependent on global suppliers.”

He also pointed out the necessity for advanced research in safety and handling, particularly for internal combustion engines and fuel cells, as well as the importance of developing indigenous solutions to facilitate the transition to a hydrogen-based economy.

The workshop served as a vital platform for over 150 participants from academia and industry, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing. With high-level technical papers presented, the event underscored the growing momentum in hydrogen technology and its applications.

As India moves forward under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming to become a global hub for hydrogen production and export, initiatives like this workshop are crucial for discussing the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in harnessing hydrogen’s potential for a sustainable future.
