A growing number of young Americans are contemplating leaving the United States due to increasing disillusionment with the country’s political climate, economic pressures, and overall direction. According to a recent survey conducted by the American Psychological Association involving over 3,000 adults, approximately 63 percent of individuals aged 18 to 34 have seriously considered relocating abroad. This trend signals a shift in how the nation’s youth perceive the once-coveted promise of the American Dream.

The survey highlights that 76 percent of Americans view the future of the country as a significant source of stress. Among young adults, feelings of frustration and uncertainty are palpable, with many expressing concerns about political division, social isolation, and economic instability. The emotional strain is exacerbated by a public life that has become increasingly polarized, where even minor issues spark intense ideological conflicts.

Economic Pressures Intensify Concerns

Economic factors remain a primary concern for many, with 75 percent of respondents identifying it as a major stressor. Within this group, 65 percent cite rising housing costs, while 69 percent report work-related stress as significant contributors to their anxiety. A separate national poll revealed that three-quarters of households experienced increases in monthly expenses over the past year, with many reporting hikes ranging from $100 to $700.

These economic pressures have compounded feelings of instability, affecting individuals across various age groups and political affiliations. The survey also found that those who perceive national division as a significant stress factor are more likely to experience loneliness, with 61 percent indicating they often or sometimes feel isolated.

The American Dream, traditionally associated with the belief that hard work leads to stability and progress, appears increasingly out of reach for many young adults. As confidence in institutions and political leadership declines, the notion of seeking better opportunities abroad gains traction.
