A group of women in Bengaluru is set to participate in a night walk aimed at reclaiming public spaces on Friday, March 15, 2024. The event, titled “Women Walk at Midnight,” will commence at 21:30 near Vidhana Soudha and is expected to continue past midnight. This initiative is part of a broader movement that began in Delhi in 2016, inspired by the Nirbhaya movement and the powerful words of social activist Maya Krishna Rao: “In the day, at midnight, or at 3 in the morning, I (we) will walk.”

The Bengaluru chapter of this initiative was established by Prithvi Hegde in 2019. It has previously seen successful walks in areas such as Koramangala, Malleswaram, and M G Road. After a pause in 2023, the walks are being revived this year, driven by renewed interest from the community. Hegde noted that the initiative is fueled by an overwhelming wave of enthusiasm, reflecting the ongoing need for safe public spaces for women.

The focus of the walk is on collective courage and the right to safe movement in public areas. Hegde emphasizes that the participants do not require formal safety measures. “It’s just a walk, and we find safety in walking together,” she stated. This sentiment underscores the initiative’s purpose: to foster a sense of empowerment and solidarity among women.

While registrations for this particular event have closed, those interested in future walks can find more information on social media through the handle @wewalkatmidnight or by visiting womenwalkatmidnight.com. The movement continues to gain traction, highlighting the importance of women’s presence in public spaces at all hours.
