Victim’s Father Urges West Bengal CM to Relocate Daughter for Safety
The father of a medical student who was allegedly gang-raped in Durgapur has requested West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to facilitate his daughter’s relocation to Odisha for her safety. The victim, who is currently bedridden and unable to walk, is receiving medical treatment following the traumatic incident. This plea highlights ongoing concerns regarding the safety of individuals in the region.
In an interview with ANI, the victim’s father expressed gratitude for the support provided by local authorities but stressed the urgency of relocating his daughter. He stated, “She is unable to walk and is on bedrest. The Chief Minister, DG, SP, and Collector are all helping us a lot and regularly enquiring about her health… I have requested the Chief Minister to let us take my daughter away from here to Odisha, to a safer place because here, her safety is at risk.”
Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the alleged assault, as confirmed by the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate. The victim, a second-year student at a private medical college, is from Jaleswar, Odisha. According to her father, she had gone out with a classmate to get something to eat when the attack occurred. He described how the classmate abandoned her during the assault, leaving her vulnerable to the attackers.
As the father recounted the harrowing details, he noted, “At 10 PM, her friend called us and said that your daughter had been raped. We live in Jaleshwar. My daughter was studying here. Yesterday, one of her classmates took her out on the pretext of getting something to eat, but when two or three other men arrived, he abandoned her and fled. They raped her… This incident occurred between 8:00 and 9:00 PM. The hostel was far away, and she had come here to eat. The security arrangements are not sufficient… Such a serious incident occurred, but no action has been taken. There is no system here, no response.”
Following the incident, Ranjana Roy, the Deputy Magistrate and Sub-Divisional Officer of Durgapur, provided an update on the victim’s condition. She confirmed that the student is stable and that her mother is by her side. Roy assured the family that comprehensive support would be provided and that appropriate action would follow.
She stated, “She is in stable condition and her mother is with her… We are giving her all the support, and we have assured them that action will be taken.”
In response to the incident, Mohan Charan Majhi, the Chief Minister of Odisha, condemned the assault as “highly condemnable and painful.” He urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to take exemplary measures against the accused. Majhi’s statement emphasized the need for justice, saying, “I am deeply shocked upon hearing this news. I strongly urge the West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to take exemplary action against the accused as per the law.”
The Odisha government has vowed to provide all necessary support to the victim’s family as they navigate this distressing situation. The case has raised serious concerns about safety and security for women in the region, prompting calls for improved measures to protect vulnerable individuals.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victim and addressing the broader issues of safety that have emerged from this tragic event.
