US Expands Travel Ban to 39 Countries Amid Security Concerns
The United States has expanded its travel ban to include five additional countries, raising the total to 39 nations facing full or partial restrictions. The latest additions—Laos, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—join a list that already includes countries like Afghanistan and Iran under a complete entry ban.
This expansion also affects travelers holding Palestinian Authority-issued documents. In a notable policy shift, the ban on nonimmigrant visas for individuals from Turkmenistan has been lifted, although entry remains suspended for Turkmen nationals. The restrictions include exemptions for lawful permanent residents, existing visa holders, and individuals whose entry aligns with U.S. national interests.
Details on the Travel Restrictions
The U.S. government’s latest proclamation imposes additional scrutiny on 15 countries, including Nigeria, Tanzania, and Senegal. Citizens from these nations will face increased vetting and limitations on specific visa categories. The decision follows the arrest of an Afghan national linked to a shooting incident involving National Guard members in Washington, D.C., during the Thanksgiving weekend.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the expansion by citing persistent deficiencies in the screening and information-sharing practices of the newly added countries. Noem emphasized that the U.S. cannot accept individuals from nations that fail to reliably verify identities or criminal histories.
Critics of the ban, including civil rights advocates, argue that this move constitutes collective punishment, adversely impacting refugees and families who have already passed extensive background checks. Legal experts note that although the Supreme Court upheld a previous iteration of the ban in 2018, this latest expansion affects approximately 5% of the world’s population.
