UN Human Rights Chief Urges End to Violence Following Hadi’s Death
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has called for an immediate cessation of all forms of violence and revenge attacks in Bangladesh. This appeal follows the recent death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a rising political figure associated with the Inquilab Mancha. Turk emphasized the need for a prompt and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Hadi’s death to ensure accountability for those responsible.
Hadi’s body was returned to Dhaka from Singapore, where he had been receiving medical treatment. Turk warned that acts of retaliation would only serve to exacerbate divisions within the country and undermine the rights of all citizens. He urged the authorities to act decisively to prevent further violence and promote a peaceful resolution to the ongoing tensions.
Government Response to Violence
In response to the escalating situation, the interim government’s Chief Adviser, Mohammad Yunus, condemned the violence in Bangladesh. He called on citizens to reject mob violence perpetrated by fringe groups and denounced acts of intimidation, arson, and property destruction that have marred the nation’s peace. Yunus expressed his condolences regarding Hadi’s death and extended his support for a thorough investigation into the matter.
Yunus announced that funeral prayers for Hadi would be held at 2:00 PM on December 20, 2025, at the South Plaza of the National Parliament in Dhaka. A significant gathering of leaders from various political parties is expected to attend, highlighting the widespread impact of Hadi’s untimely demise. As the government urges calm, the situation in Bangladesh remains tense, with ongoing calls for accountability and justice.
Turk’s statement and the government’s response underscore the urgency of restoring order and upholding human rights in the face of escalating violence. Both leaders are advocating for a peaceful and unified approach to addressing the challenges facing the nation, as the people of Bangladesh navigate this turbulent period.
