Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray Strengthen Alliance Ahead of BMC Elections

Senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut recently asserted that the alliance between Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray is now stronger than ever, particularly in the lead-up to the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Raut’s comments, made on Monday in Mumbai, emphasized that the next mayor will be a Marathi candidate embodying a “real saffron colour,” indicating a commitment to local leadership that resists external pressures from Delhi.

As the political landscape shifts ahead of the elections, Raut suggested that the Shiv Sena (UBT) will rely heavily on its traditional “sons of the soil” agenda. He addressed the potential alliance with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, stating that this partnership will be built with “heart and mind,” noting that it transcends typical political motivations. Raut remarked, “This alliance will be made from ‘dil’ (heart) and ‘dimag’ (mind). This is not a political alliance. This is an alliance made with tan-mann-dhan.”

The Thackeray cousins, who have historically had a complex relationship, met on Sunday during a family gathering. Following this event, Raj Thackeray visited Uddhav’s residence, Matoshree, where they engaged in significant discussions about the upcoming elections. Raut confirmed that these talks were substantial and that the two sides are nearing a formal agreement.

“Whatever anyone says, the dialogue and relationship between Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray have become very strong. Even if someone tries their hardest to break it, the talks have progressed much further. There is no turning back now,” Raut stated, reinforcing the sense of unity between the two leaders. He emphasized their determination to stand together, regardless of external commentary or opposition.

When questioned about the possibility of the MNS joining the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which comprises the Shiv Sena (UBT), the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and the Congress party in Maharashtra, Raut clarified that such decisions rest with Raj Thackeray. “The MVA was formed out of three major parties. The MNS is an independent party. The discussions are between the Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS for the civic polls. However, the ties with the MVA are good and Raj Thackeray has good ties with the MVA leaders,” he explained.

Despite Raut’s assurances, an MNS representative stated that no political discussions occurred during Raj Thackeray’s visit to Matoshree, asserting that the meeting was merely social. Furthermore, when asked about a formal announcement regarding an alliance, the MNS leader pointed out the complexity of the political landscape, noting that there are 27 civic bodies in the state, necessitating detailed discussions on seat allocations and panels.

As the BMC elections approach, the evolving relationship between the Thackeray cousins is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the political dynamics in Maharashtra. With the groundwork being laid for potential collaboration, the outcome of these discussions could significantly impact the electoral landscape in Mumbai.
