Trump to Receive Israel’s Highest Civilian Honour for Peace Efforts
US President Donald Trump will be awarded Israel’s highest civilian honour, the Israeli Presidential Medal of Honour, on Monday in recognition of his significant role in facilitating the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. In a statement, Israeli President Isaac Herzog praised Trump’s efforts, saying, “Through his tireless efforts, President Trump has not only helped bring our loved ones home but has also laid the foundations for a new era in the Middle East built on security, cooperation, and genuine hope for a peaceful future.” The formal presentation of the award will take place in the coming months.
The announcement follows Trump’s recent success in brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, a move that is crucial to the ongoing discussions surrounding a hostage-detainee exchange. Israel anticipates the release of 20 living hostages by Hamas on Monday, which will be met with Israel’s release of approximately 2,000 Palestinian detainees. This exchange is part of the initial phase of Trump’s 20-point peace plan, aimed at resolving over two years of conflict triggered by an attack from Hamas on October 7, 2023.
Significance of the Hostage-Detainee Exchange
The planned hostage-detainee swap signifies a critical step in establishing a lasting truce between the two parties. Trump’s involvement has been pivotal, leading to negotiations that many hope will bring an end to the violent hostilities that have plagued the region. During his brief visit to Israel, Trump is expected to meet with the families of the released hostages and deliver remarks to the Israeli Parliament, emphasizing the importance of international collaboration in achieving peace.
Following his time in Israel, Trump will travel to Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, where he will co-host a Gaza peace summit alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Notably, Israel has not been invited to participate in this summit, raising questions about the future of negotiations involving the nation and its role in the broader peace process.
The upcoming award ceremony reflects not only Trump’s diplomatic efforts but also highlights Israel’s commitment to fostering relationships with key international leaders. Previously, former US Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden received the same honour in 2013 and 2022, respectively, underscoring a continued tradition of acknowledging contributions to peace in the region.
As the situation in the Middle East remains fluid, the outcomes of these negotiations and exchanges will be closely monitored by global observers. The potential for a new era of cooperation and stability hangs in the balance, influenced significantly by the actions of leaders like Trump and Herzog.
