Thackeray Challenges BJP Over Reintroduction of Mumbai 24/7 Policy

Aaditya Thackeray, leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), has taken aim at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following its recent decision to revive the controversial Mumbai 24/7 policy. Initially introduced by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in January 2020, this policy allows shops, malls, and restaurants in non-residential areas of Mumbai to operate around the clock. Thackeray described the BJP’s reversal as “ironic and amusing,” given their previous strong opposition to the initiative.
In a post on the social media platform X, Thackeray highlighted the inconsistency in the BJP’s stance. He remarked, “The same BJP that had slammed my `Mumbai 24/7` policy, citing culture and safety concerns, has now brought back the very same policy.” He questioned the motivations behind the BJP’s change of heart, asking, “What made the BJP change its mind now?”
Thackeray’s skepticism stems from the BJP’s earlier resistance to the policy, which they criticized for potential safety and public order issues. He emphasized the need for the policy by stating, “What exactly is the problem in allowing hard-working Mumbaikars the chance to eat, relax and enjoy themselves late at night? Mumbai is the city of workers. It never sleeps.”
Details of the Revived Policy
The Maharashtra government officially reintroduced the 24/7 policy on October 1, 2025, through a Government Resolution (GR). This resolution allows commercial establishments, including residential hotels, restaurants, eateries, theatres, and places of public amusement, to operate continuously throughout the day and night. However, the GR specifies that establishments serving alcohol, such as wine shops and dance bars, will still be subject to restricted operating hours.
Under the new policy, businesses are required to provide employees with a continuous rest period of at least 24 hours each week. Local administrations and police departments will oversee enforcement of these regulations to ensure compliance.
Thackeray’s critique has sparked a broader conversation about the future of Mumbai’s nightlife and the responsibilities of governing bodies in supporting local businesses while addressing safety concerns. The revival of the Mumbai 24/7 policy reflects a significant shift in policy direction, and it remains to be seen how it will be implemented across the city.
As the city prepares for these changes, residents and business owners alike will be watching closely to see how the policy impacts the vibrant, around-the-clock culture that Mumbai is known for.
