Shahbaz Sharif Emphasizes Kashmir’s Role in India-Pakistan Relations
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the critical nature of the Kashmir issue during a recent speech in London, asserting that lasting peace between India and Pakistan hinges on its resolution. This statement reflects a long-standing position that remains a significant hurdle in diplomatic relations between the two nations.
In his address, Sharif called for constructive dialogue with India, emphasizing the need for discussions grounded in “equality.” He urged New Delhi to embrace a cooperative approach, suggesting that progress in bilateral relations is contingent upon addressing the Kashmir dispute. The Prime Minister’s remarks come at a time when tensions between the two countries persist, making the Kashmir issue a focal point of international attention.
Sharif also recognized the substantial contributions of overseas Pakistanis, particularly those in the UK, who are expected to send home a remarkable $48.5 billion in remittances this year. This financial support underscores the importance of the Pakistani diaspora and its role in the nation’s economy.
Looking ahead, Sharif is scheduled to attend the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York from September 22 to 26. He plans to engage with various Muslim leaders and meet with US President Donald Trump. This visit follows the recent signing of a defense pact between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, highlighting ongoing regional alliances.
India will be represented at the UN by S. Jaishankar, the External Affairs Minister, who is expected to hold bilateral discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. As both nations prepare for these high-profile meetings, the Kashmir issue is likely to remain a central topic in any discussions regarding India-Pakistan relations.
The Prime Minister’s comments in London serve as a reminder of the complexities surrounding the Kashmir dispute and its implications for regional stability. As diplomatic efforts continue, the call for dialogue based on equality remains a crucial element in the quest for peace between these two neighboring countries.
