Russia and US Discuss Ambitious Bering Strait Tunnel Project
A proposal for a rail tunnel linking Russia and the United States under the Bering Strait has emerged, aiming to enhance bilateral connections and facilitate joint resource exploration. Kirill Dmitriev, the head of Russia’s RDIF sovereign wealth fund and an envoy for President Vladimir Putin, suggested the “Putin-Trump” tunnel, which is projected to cost $8 billion and could be completed in under eight years.
During a recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, US President Donald Trump described the idea as “interesting.” He expressed curiosity about the proposal, which aims to create a 70-mile (approximately 112-km) rail and cargo link between the two nations. The discussion follows a phone call between Trump and Putin, during which they touched on efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Dmitriev detailed the proposal in a post on the social media platform X, citing historical visions of connectivity between the US and Russia, from the 1904 Siberia-Alaska railway to a 2007 plan by Russia. He indicated that the RDIF has evaluated existing proposals, including a potential US-Canada-Russia-China railroad, and is committed to supporting the most viable options.
In a notable twist, Dmitriev suggested that the construction of the tunnel could be undertaken by The Boring Company, a tunnel construction firm owned by billionaire Elon Musk. Dmitriev’s message to Musk on X highlighted the potential for this tunnel to symbolize unity between the Americas and Afro-Eurasia. He emphasized that while traditional cost estimates for such projects could reach $65 billion, Musk’s technology could reduce the expenditure to less than $8 billion.
Zelensky, present during Trump’s remarks about the tunnel, expressed his discontent with the idea, leading to laughter among US officials. The Ukrainian leader’s response underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play, as the proposal comes amid ongoing tensions related to the war in Ukraine.
While Trump has previously shown some openness to providing Ukraine with long-range missile systems, he appeared to downplay this prospect following a call with Putin, emphasizing a cautious approach to military support for Ukraine. The ongoing discussions between the US and Russia reflect a delicate balance as both nations navigate their interests in a rapidly changing global landscape.
As the world watches these developments, the proposed tunnel could serve as both a literal and metaphorical bridge between two nations with a historically fraught relationship.
