Protests Erupt in Goa Following Brutal Attack on Activist

Protests erupted in Goa on March 15, 2024, following the brutal attack on social activist Rama Kankonkar the previous day. The incident, which occurred in broad daylight, has sparked widespread outrage, with thousands gathering outside the Director General of Police’s office in Panaji. Demonstrators accused the state government and police of failing to uphold law and order.
The protests intensified as demonstrators vandalised the office of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and attempted to storm the premises. While the Goa Police arrested five of the six attackers shortly after the incident, tensions remained high as protesters demanded accountability and justice for Kankonkar.
The attack took place on March 14 in the Karanjale area of Panaji, where Kankonkar was assaulted by a group of six men armed with wires and knives. Disturbing CCTV footage has emerged, showing the assailants attacking the activist, who was left seriously injured and calling for help. One of the attackers was seen recording the incident on a mobile phone before the group fled on a two-wheeler, leaving Kankonkar on the ground.
Goa’s Chief Minister Pramod Sawant condemned the attack, stating that such incidents would not be tolerated. He ordered a comprehensive investigation and directed the police to take prompt action. In a statement, North Goa Superintendent of Police Rahul Gupta confirmed the swift arrests of five suspects, all of whom have prior criminal records. A manhunt is currently underway for the sixth suspect, who remains at large.
The brutal assault has ignited a political firestorm in Goa, with opposition leaders and social activists visiting Kankonkar at Goa Medical College. Among those who called on him were opposition leader Yuri Alemayehu, Goa Forward president Vijay Sardesai, and AAP president Amit Palekar. Their presence underscores the growing concerns over the state’s law and order situation and the rising violence against activists.
Kankonkar’s sustained campaign against alleged corruption has raised suspicions regarding the motives behind the attack. The incident has led to widespread criticism of the BJP-led government, with many calling for a reevaluation of the party’s approach to public safety.
As the investigation continues and the protests show no signs of abating, the events surrounding Kankonkar’s attack are likely to have significant implications for Goa’s political landscape. The call for justice resonates not only with those in the immediate vicinity but also with a broader audience concerned about civil rights and government accountability.
