PM Modi Returns to New Delhi After Successful SCO Summit in China

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has returned to New Delhi following a two-day visit to China, where he attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. During his visit, he engaged in crucial discussions with several world leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

On September 1, 2025, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude through a post on X, stating, “Concluding a productive visit to China, where I attended the SCO Summit and interacted with various world leaders. Also emphasised India’s stand on key global issues. Thankful to President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government and people for the successful organisation of this Summit.”

Key Discussions at the SCO Summit

The 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO brought together leaders to discuss pressing issues, including global governance, counter-terrorism, and sustainable development. The summit featured extensive dialogue on the SCO’s development strategy and economic cooperation.

In a meeting with President Putin, the two leaders focused on enhancing bilateral ties across various sectors such as space, trade, security, and culture. Prime Minister Modi underscored the importance of cooperation within the SCO framework, advocating for action on three main pillars: Security, Connectivity, and Opportunity.

During his address at the summit, Modi emphasized the need for strong collective action against terrorism. He highlighted the necessity for member countries to combat terrorism effectively, stating, “There should be no double standards in dealing with terrorism,” and called for accountability for nations that support cross-border terrorism.

Strengthening Connectivity and Collaboration

Prime Minister Modi also pointed out the significance of connectivity in fostering development and trust among member nations. He reiterated India’s commitment to projects such as the Chabahar port and the International North-South Transport Corridor.

He introduced the concept of a Civilisational Dialogue Forum within the SCO to promote cultural understanding and strengthen people-to-people connections. Modi also spoke about opportunities in start-ups, innovation, and youth empowerment, urging member states to pursue these initiatives collectively.

In addition, Prime Minister Modi expressed his support for the group’s reform-oriented agenda. He welcomed the establishment of centers to combat organized crime, drug trafficking, and cyber security, while also advocating for reforms in multilateral institutions, including the United Nations.

As the summit concluded, the SCO member nations adopted the Tianjin Declaration. Modi thanked President Xi Jinping for his hospitality and congratulated Kyrgyzstan on assuming the next Presidency of the SCO.

This visit and the discussions held mark a significant step in India’s engagement with key global issues and its commitment to strengthening ties within the SCO framework.
