PM Modi Engages with Finland’s President Stubb on Ukraine and Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India engaged in a significant telephone conversation with Alexander Stubb, President of Finland, on March 13, 2024. The exchange focused on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the strengthening of bilateral relations between India and Finland, as confirmed by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Discussion on the Ukraine Conflict
During the call, President Stubb provided insights regarding recent discussions held in Washington among leaders from Europe, the United States, and Ukraine concerning efforts to resolve the conflict. Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s enduring commitment to a peaceful resolution and emphasized the need for stability in the region.
The leaders also addressed the importance of international cooperation in navigating the challenges posed by the conflict. Modi’s statement reflected India’s position as a mediator, highlighting its role in advocating for peace and dialogue.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Beyond the urgent issue of Ukraine, both leaders evaluated the progress in the India-Finland relationship. They expressed mutual interest in enhancing collaboration in innovative sectors such as quantum technologies, 6G, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and sustainability. The MEA noted that President Stubb reiterated Finland’s support for an expedited conclusion of a mutually beneficial India-EU Free Trade Agreement.
The conversation also touched on the upcoming AI Impact Summit, which India is set to host in 2026. President Stubb expressed Finland’s commitment to the summit’s success, recognizing its potential to foster international dialogue on artificial intelligence.
In a gesture of goodwill, Prime Minister Modi invited President Stubb to visit India soon. Both leaders agreed to maintain regular communication to further their discussions.
Following the call, Modi shared his reflections on X, stating, “Had a good conversation with President Alexander Stubb. Finland is a valued partner in the EU. Discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in key sectors such as trade, technology, and sustainability. Exchanged perspectives on the ongoing efforts for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.”
President Stubb echoed this sentiment in his own post, underscoring the necessity for a just and enduring solution to the conflict. He remarked, “Ending the war is in all our interests, it’s a shared goal. India plays an important role. It is heard and respected in the South, West, and East. We also agreed on the need to further deepen the relations between India and the EU. Our cooperation grows and continues.”
This dialogue marks a notable step in enhancing bilateral ties and reflects the broader international community’s commitment to addressing ongoing global challenges.
