Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a series of significant bilateral discussions on July 16, 2023, during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China. His meetings included talks with leaders from various nations, focusing on enhancing strategic partnerships and addressing key regional issues.
One of the most notable discussions occurred between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The two leaders explored recent developments in bilateral relations, specifically aiming to resolve ongoing border tensions. They agreed to pursue a “fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable” resolution to the long-standing border issue. Additionally, their talks addressed concerns regarding trade imbalances and emphasized cooperation in counter-terrorism and fair practices in international trade.
In a post-meeting update, PM Modi highlighted, “We reviewed the positive momentum in India-China relations since our last meeting in Kazan. We agreed on the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility in border areas and reaffirmed our commitment to cooperation based on mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity.”
Strengthening Partnerships Across Asia and Beyond
PM Modi’s diplomatic efforts extended beyond China. He met with several leaders, including Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, where he praised the developmental cooperation between the two nations as being “greatly beneficial for our people.” The Prime Minister also held discussions with Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, marking their second meeting of the year. They focused on boosting ties in trade, connectivity, energy, and security, reaffirming Myanmar’s importance in India’s Act East and Neighbourhood First Policies.
During discussions with Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, PM Modi characterized India-Nepal relations as “deep-rooted and very special.” His meeting with Vietnam’s Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính underscored India’s eagerness to deepen ties in defense, trade, and green energy initiatives.
The agenda also included a meeting with Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, where PM Modi fondly recalled his previous visit to Egypt, stating, “India-Egypt friendship is scaling newer heights of progress!” Further discussions took place with President Thongloun Sisoulith of Laos, emphasizing the beneficial nature of trade and cultural ties between their countries.
In talks with Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon, both leaders recognized the growing trade and cultural connections. PM Modi expressed optimism during his meeting with Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko about future cooperation opportunities. He also discussed the robust partnership with Kyrgyzstan’s President Sadyr Japarov, aiming to enhance developmental collaboration.
Moreover, PM Modi shared insights with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev about the dynamic partnership between India and Uzbekistan, which continues to expand across cultural and economic dimensions. Discussions with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan highlighted the warm relationship rooted in friendship and mutual cooperation. The Prime Minister concluded his series of meetings with Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedow, exchanging views on various issues pertinent to both nations.
This series of high-level discussions illustrates PM Modi’s commitment to strengthening India’s position in regional and international affairs. The engagements at the SCO Summit reflect a proactive approach to diplomacy, aiming for constructive relationships that promote peace, trade, and security across Asia and beyond.
