Om Birla Highlights Modi Government’s Aim to Cut Red Tape
During a recent event in Kolkata, Om Birla, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, underscored the Indian government’s commitment to reducing bureaucratic obstacles, commonly referred to as ‘red tape’, to facilitate industrial growth. Speaking at the 125th anniversary celebration of the Bharat Chamber of Commerce, Birla emphasized that the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is pivotal in this mission.
Commitment to Economic Growth
Birla asserted that the government’s objective is to ensure a ‘minimum government’ presence in economic affairs, thereby allowing for greater industrial development. He remarked on India’s rapid economic progress and the abundance of available resources. “The amount of resources available in India and the way infrastructure is expanding—roads, railways, and air—indicates that the economic progress of the country is fast developing,” he stated.
At the event titled ‘India@100: An Age of A New Dawn’, Birla highlighted the role of democracy in fostering participation among citizens. He noted that since the first elections held before 1952, the strength of democracy in India has only intensified, despite changes in power dynamics.
The Significance of Diversity
Birla further emphasized that India’s diversity serves as its greatest asset, making the nation an attractive destination for global investors. He attributed the country’s appeal to its democratic practices and transparent governance. “We have celebrated the 75th anniversary of our independence, which has showcased a nation rich in diversity,” he said, alluding to the ongoing economic and social transformations in India.
Reflecting on the historical significance of Kolkata, Birla referred to the city as the economic capital during the British era. He celebrated Bengal’s rich cultural heritage and its notable contributions to India’s freedom movement, stating, “Bengal’s contribution to the freedom movement of the country is well known.” He praised the Bharat Chamber of Commerce for its role in protecting national interests and preserving the country’s core culture.
Birla’s remarks were made in the context of the Chamber’s longstanding history, which dates back to its founding in 1900. The event also featured speeches from notable figures, including Naresh Pachisia, President of the Bharat Chamber of Commerce, H. M. Bangur, Chief Patron, and N. G. Khaitan, Chairman of the 125th Anniversary Celebrations Committee.
As the celebrations continue, the focus remains on the future trajectory of India’s economic landscape, bolstered by a commitment to cutting red tape and enhancing industrial growth.
