Modi and Xi Emphasize Peace and Cooperation at SCO Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on March 19, 2023, in Tianjin during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. The two leaders emphasized the necessity of maintaining peace and cooperation between India and China, asserting that their differences should not escalate into disputes.
During a briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri conveyed that both leaders acknowledged the importance of prioritizing common interests over differences. Misri stated, “The common interests of the two countries outweigh their differences, and the two leaders also shared a consensus on the fact that differences should not be allowed to be turned into disputes.”
The discussion highlighted that both nations are primarily focused on their respective domestic development goals. Misri noted that India and China view themselves as partners rather than rivals in this context. He remarked that a stable and amicable relationship between the two countries would benefit the approximately 2.8 billion people residing in both nations.
In the wake of ongoing tensions along the border, this meeting marks a significant step towards de-escalation. Both leaders recognized the necessity of dialogue and collaboration to foster a peaceful coexistence. Misri emphasized that the meeting was constructive, reflecting a mutual understanding of the need for cooperation.
The SCO summit provided a platform for the leaders to engage directly, reinforcing the notion that diplomacy is essential for addressing regional challenges. The Foreign Secretary expressed optimism that this dialogue could pave the way for further discussions on various issues, including security and economic cooperation.
As the international community watches closely, the commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region will be pivotal not only for India and China but also for broader geopolitical dynamics. The discussions between Modi and Xi are seen as a crucial element in fostering a more stable environment in Asia.
Through these engagements, both leaders aim to ensure that their nations can work together effectively, focusing on shared goals rather than allowing differences to create unnecessary conflicts. The emphasis on collaboration signifies a potential shift towards a more cooperative relationship, which could have lasting implications for both countries and the region as a whole.
