Mirwaiz Allowed to Pay Respects Following Prof Bhat’s Death

The Jammu and Kashmir administration permitted Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the chairman of the Hurriyat Conference, to visit Sopore on March 15, 2024, to express condolences to the family of prominent Hurriyat leader Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, who passed away at the age of 89 on March 12, 2024. This decision came after a three-day period of house detention for Mirwaiz, during which he was not allowed to participate in any public gatherings.
Mirwaiz was released early on Saturday morning and immediately travelled to the residence of Prof Bhat in Botingoo, Sopore. Speaking to mourners, he reflected on their relationship, describing Bhat as “an affectionate elder, dear friend, and guide.” He praised Bhat’s contributions as an academic and political figure, stating, “Prof Bhat was not only a respected academic and scholar but also a visionary politician who consistently upheld dialogue and moderation as the way forward. His legacy as a scholar, visionary, and dreamer of peace will continue to inspire.”
The untimely passing of Prof Bhat prompted the Union Territory administration to impose restrictions on several prominent Kashmiri leaders. Alongside Mirwaiz, former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti and Sajad Lone, president of the Peoples Conference, were also placed under house arrest. These measures were enacted to prevent potential law-and-order issues during the time of mourning.
Many members of the community have expressed their sorrow at the loss of Prof Bhat, highlighting his extensive contributions to the region’s academic and political landscape. His passing has left a significant void, not only among his family and friends but also within the broader Kashmiri society.
As the region navigates these complex feelings of grief and reflection, the administration’s decision to allow Mirwaiz to attend the condolences serves as a reminder of the importance of dialogue and unity, values that Prof Bhat championed throughout his life.
