Manoj Jarange Resumes Water Intake Amid Health Concerns
Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange resumed drinking water late on Monday after a brief period of concern regarding his health. The activist, who began a dry fast on Monday, had abstained from water for nearly a day, prompting alarm among supporters and medical personnel monitoring his condition.
On the same day, a medical team led by Dr. Ajay Chandanwale, the state’s Director of Medical Education and Research, conducted a thorough examination at Jarange’s protest site. They assessed his vital signs, including blood pressure, and collected blood samples for a range of tests, including Complete Blood Count (CBC) and routine blood parameters. Preliminary reports from these tests are expected later today.
Dr. Chandanwale provided updates to the media, stating, “Jarange has been on a hunger strike for several days now, and Monday’s waterless fast had worsened his condition. We carried out mandatory checks to ensure there are no immediate risks.” He confirmed that fluctuations in Jarange’s blood pressure were a common sign of dehydration and prolonged fasting. A second medical team was scheduled to arrive later on Monday evening to conduct advanced tests to assess kidney function and other health parameters.
“Kidney function is particularly at risk during waterless fasts,” a senior physician from the state health department noted. “High creatinine or electrolyte imbalance can be dangerous. We will only know the extent of the impact once the lab reports come in.”
Jarange’s decision to consume water came after persistent appeals from both medical staff and community leaders who expressed concerns for his well-being. This act has been interpreted as a partial concession, as he continues his hunger strike aimed at securing full reservation benefits for the Maratha community.
The state administration is closely monitoring the developments in Jarange’s health, given the intense pressure to address the ongoing quota crisis. Any deterioration in his condition could potentially escalate tensions among his supporters across Maharashtra, where solidarity protests have already disrupted daily life.
As the region anticipates medical reports, attention remains focused on the protest site. While Jarange’s temporary hydration has alleviated immediate health concerns, the broader political and social debate surrounding Maratha reservation continues unabated. For now, a simple glass of water has provided a moment of relief in a situation fraught with tension.
