Maharashtra Government Cancels Exams During Ganesh Festival 2025

The Maharashtra government has announced that no exams will be conducted in schools, colleges, or universities during the Ganesh festival in 2025. This decision, confirmed by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), follows a strong recommendation from Amit Thackeray, President of the MNS Students Wing.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, the MNS emphasized that this move respects the cultural and emotional significance of Ganeshotsav, a festival celebrated statewide. Amit Thackeray previously highlighted the need for students to engage fully in the festivities without the pressure of academic assessments.
On social media, he expressed that exams should not be scheduled during Ganeshotsav, which spans ten days from Ganesh Chaturthi to Anant Chaturdashi. Thackeray stated, “On behalf of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, a memorandum was submitted to Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, requesting that exams during the Ganeshotsav period be postponed.” He acknowledged Shelar’s prompt response, noting, “After hearing our concerns, he took the matter seriously and immediately contacted the Chief Secretary to ensure necessary steps were taken.”
The MNS pointed out that Ganeshotsav is not just a religious observance but a significant cultural event in Maharashtra. Families often travel to their hometowns, and students actively participate in organizing community events and mandals. Recognizing its importance, the Ministry of Culture has officially designated Ganeshotsav as a state festival.
Instructions have been issued to all educational institutions—state, private, and deemed universities—to avoid scheduling exams during this period. Any exams already planned must now be rescheduled, as stated by the MNS.
This decision has garnered positive reactions from students, parents, and educators alike. Students believe this change will allow them to focus on the festival, while families appreciate the respect for tradition that enables everyone to participate fully.
Amit Thackeray described the decision as “a much-needed step to protect student interests and uphold Maharashtra’s traditions.” He emphasized that students should not have to choose between academic responsibilities and cultural obligations.
The announcement reflects a growing sensitivity within the state government towards student welfare, particularly concerning issues raised by the MNS Students Wing. This organization has been proactive in addressing concerns related to education and exam schedules, showcasing its commitment to improving the student experience in Maharashtra.
