Kashmir’s Changing Mornings: From Gyms to Wedding Feasts

Kashmir is witnessing a notable shift in its cultural landscape as young individuals increasingly embrace fitness routines, transforming their mornings into vigorous gym sessions. Armed with shaker bottles and wireless earbuds, they enter fitness centers with a purpose reminiscent of warriors. Despite this surge in physical activity, a concerning trend lurks beneath the surface, highlighting the impact of lifestyle choices on health.
The enthusiasm for fitness has led to a surge in the consumption of protein supplements and processed foods. Protein powders and egg whites have become staples, while chicken breasts imported from Punjab and Delhi are consumed in large quantities. Despite the visible commitment to fitness, health issues are emerging, as poor dietary choices contribute to rising rates of obesity and related conditions.
Marriages and Culinary Excess
As the summer months approach, Kashmir enters its wedding season, often referred to as the “Great Wazwan World Cup.” Families place a significant emphasis on lavish feasts, measuring honor in the quantity of mutton served rather than the quality of the event. Households frequently deplete savings or take loans to host extravagant meals, where guests may consume upwards of 10,000 calories per sitting.
This culinary excess often overshadows the well-being of young women waiting for marriage, as their futures become intertwined with the financial burdens of hosting grand celebrations. While affluent families might afford simpler weddings, the pressure to showcase wealth often leads to extravagant displays.
The Healthcare Industry’s Response
Amidst this backdrop, the healthcare sector in Kashmir continues to thrive, capitalizing on the rising demand for medical services. Minor injuries can lead to unnecessary treatments, with patients receiving diagnoses for conditions they do not have. In this landscape, healthcare facilities resemble wellness resorts rather than traditional medical institutions, with diagnostic tests often adding to the financial strain on families.
Ironically, many health issues stem from overindulgence rather than inactivity. People engage in morning workouts, only to overeat during the day and seek medical remedies at night. This cycle raises questions about the effectiveness of current health strategies, which often rely on supplements and medical interventions rather than addressing the root causes.
The solution may lie in a return to traditional Kashmiri cooking, emphasizing fresh vegetables, homemade curd, ghee, and turmeric. By focusing on simpler meals and mindful eating, individuals can cultivate healthier lifestyles.
While the youth of Kashmir continue to share their fitness journeys online, it is equally important to promote a balanced approach to health—one that values nutrition and daily habits over fleeting trends. In a world increasingly driven by excess, the challenge lies in slowing down and embracing moderation. The real victory is not found in the gym or lavish weddings, but in fostering a sustainable relationship with food and health.
