JD Vance Urges Russia to Negotiate with Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict

Vice President JD Vance has called on Russia to engage in peace negotiations with Ukraine, aligning his remarks with those made recently by former President Donald Trump. Speaking on Fox News on September 28, 2023, Vance emphasized the need for Moscow to acknowledge the realities of the ongoing conflict and the significant human toll it has taken.
Vance stated, “The Russians have got to wake up and accept reality here. A lot of people are dying. They don’t have a lot to show for it.” He highlighted that Russia currently finds itself on the defensive in the war, questioning, “How many more people are they willing to lose? How many more people are they willing to kill for very little, if any, gain in the military advantage on the ground there?” His comments suggest a call for a shift in strategy from the Kremlin.
Calls for Peace and Recognition of the Situation
Vance expressed his support for Trump’s recent remarks at the United Nations, where the former president met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump indicated that Ukraine might not only reclaim lost territories but could potentially expand its holdings. Vance remarked, “The president is looking at the situation. He’s saying, ‘Look, the Russian economy is in shambles. The Russians are not gaining much on the battlefield. It’s clearly time for them to listen to his passionate plea for them to come to the table and actually talk seriously about peace.’”
The Vice President noted a significant shift in battlefield dynamics, contrasting the current situation with earlier phases of the conflict. “If you go back to the last days of the Biden administration, if you go back to even a couple of months ago, the Russians were conquering large amounts of territory,” he explained. Vance pointed out that the momentum appears to have shifted, stating, “What’s happening right now, as the president articulated, is [that] Russia is really stalled. They’re killing a lot of people. They themselves are losing a lot of people. And they don’t have much territorial gain to show for it.”
Vance’s remarks underscore a growing sentiment in U.S. politics advocating for a resolution to the ongoing conflict. His call for Russia to recognize the current realities of the war reflects a broader push towards diplomatic engagement in hopes of achieving lasting peace in the region.
