India Pushes for Global Recognition of Chhath Puja with UNESCO Bid
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Sunday that the Indian government is actively working to have the Chhath Mahaparva included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. He emphasized that this inclusion would allow people worldwide to appreciate the festival’s significance and grandeur. This announcement was made during his monthly radio program, Mann Ki Baat.
The festival of Chhath, celebrated shortly after Diwali, honors the Sun God and is particularly significant in the state of Bihar. During this time, devotees offer prayers and rituals to both the setting and rising sun, seeking blessings for health and prosperity. Modi noted that the festival’s vibrant celebrations resonate not just in India, but have also gained a global audience.
In his address, Modi highlighted that the government has previously succeeded in getting Kolkata’s Durga Puja recognized by UNESCO, showcasing India’s rich cultural heritage on an international platform. “When we elevate our cultural events to a global stage, we not only promote understanding but also encourage participation from around the world,” he stated.
The Prime Minister described Chhath as a sacred festival that embodies the essence of Indian culture. He expressed his hope that the UNESCO designation would enhance the festival’s visibility and attract global interest. “Chhath is not just a festival; it is a celebration of life and nature,” he added.
Chhath Puja is celebrated with various rituals, including the offering of Arghya, a sacred offering made to the sun. Modi’s enthusiastic support for the festival aligns with broader efforts to promote India’s cultural diversity and traditions.
As the government continues its efforts, the inclusion of Chhath Mahaparva in the UNESCO list could serve as a significant milestone. It would not only honor the festival’s rich heritage but also foster a deeper connection between cultures worldwide.
The Prime Minister concluded by reaffirming his commitment to preserving and promoting India’s cultural heritage, indicating that initiatives like this are vital for enhancing the country’s global cultural footprint.
