Congress Faces Backlash Over AI Video of Modi’s Mother

A recent AI-generated video posted by the Bihar unit of the Congress Party depicting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a dream with his late mother has provoked strong condemnation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Released on September 10, 2025, the 36-second clip portrays Modi’s mother chastising him about his political actions, including the controversial demonetisation initiative and his use of her image for political gain.
The BJP swiftly responded, with Union Minister Giriraj Singh criticizing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly disrespecting maternal figures. Singh stated, “Rahul Gandhi himself does not respect his own mother; then how come he will respect another’s mother?” He called for a thorough investigation into the video, claiming it showed a lack of respect for the Prime Minister’s mother. Singh asserted that the Congress would face repercussions for its actions, stating that the public would “teach a lifetime lesson” to the party.
BJP leaders emphasized the gravity of the issue, with Union Minister Kiren Rijiju asserting that the Congress party has lost the trust of the electorate. “No wonder the Congress party is continuously losing elections,” he said, suggesting that the party’s actions reflect a broader decline in its moral standing. He claimed that the Congress fails to grasp the significance of maternal respect in Indian society.
The backlash continued with Ravi Shankar Prasad, a senior BJP member, expressing outrage over the derogatory nature of the video. He pointed out that the Congress previously subjected Modi’s mother to derogatory remarks during political rallies, further illustrating what he termed a decline in political decorum. Prasad emphasized that this pattern of behavior reveals a troubling mindset within the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
In response to the criticism, the Congress defended its video. Pawan Khera, head of the party’s media and publicity department, argued that there was no disrespect intended towards Modi or his mother. “What is their objection? Just because a mother is trying to educate the son to do something right, where is it disrespectful?” Khera asserted. He emphasized that the intent was to highlight the responsibilities of leadership rather than to insult.
Tensions surrounding this issue have escalated, especially after a separate incident on August 27, when a youth allegedly insulted Modi’s mother during the Opposition’s Voter Adhikar Yatra in Darbhanga. The individual was subsequently arrested, and Modi condemned the abuse in a video address, stating it was a disrespect not only to his mother but to all women in India.
BJP Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Samrat Choudhary asserted that the Congress has crossed moral boundaries by using AI technology to insult the Prime Minister’s mother. He described the video as evidence of “mental bankruptcy” within the party and stated that Bihar would not forgive such disrespect towards maternal figures.
Women leaders from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) also denounced the Congress for its actions. BJP Member of the Legislative Council Anamika Singh Patel questioned the appropriateness of using a deceased person in political discourse, calling it “reprehensible and insensitive.” She noted that the Congress and the RJD did not express regret after the earlier incident involving Modi’s mother.
Janata Dal (United) spokesperson Anupriya Yadav remarked that the Opposition has conducted itself shamelessly by bringing Modi’s mother into political discussions. She stated that while Bihar aims to empower women, the Opposition resorts to such tactics as a sign of desperation.
The ongoing conflict highlights the contentious nature of Indian politics, especially as parties gear up for upcoming elections. With accusations flying from both sides, the situation underscores the deep divisions that characterize the current political landscape in Bihar and beyond.
