202 Indian Nationals Recruited into Russian Army Since 2022
As of Thursday, 202 Indian nationals have been recruited into the Russian armed forces since 2022, according to information provided by the Indian government in the Rajya Sabha. This announcement, made by the Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, detailed that 26 individuals have died and seven are currently reported missing. The information was disclosed in response to inquiries from Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale and Congress Party MP Randeep Singh Surjewala regarding the status of Indians allegedly forced or illegally recruited to participate in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Government’s Diplomatic Efforts
In his response, Singh highlighted the Indian government’s proactive approach in addressing the situation. He stated that concerted diplomatic efforts have resulted in the early discharge of 119 Indian nationals, while an additional 50 individuals remain in the custody of the Russian Army. The government has assured that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is in continuous communication with Russian authorities to safeguard the well-being of these individuals and facilitate their return.
Singh also confirmed the tragic loss of 26 Indian lives in the conflict, with seven individuals still unaccounted for. Of those who died, the remains of 10 Indian nationals have been successfully repatriated to India, while two were cremated in Russia with the assistance of the Indian Mission. Singh noted, “The Ministry has provided assistance in repatriation of mortal remains of 10 deceased Indian nationals to India, and local cremation of two deceased Indian nationals.”
Assistance and Coordination
The Indian Embassy in Russia has played a crucial role in supporting discharged nationals, providing travel documents, air tickets, and logistical assistance for their return. The embassy has also worked closely with families in India throughout the evacuation process, ensuring that decisions regarding cremation or transportation of remains are made with consent.
In an ongoing commitment, the Indian government has taken this issue to multiple diplomatic levels, engaging with leaders, ministers, and senior officials from both nations. Singh assured the Parliament that efforts will persist until all remaining Indian nationals are safely discharged and returned home.
The situation underscores the complexities of international military engagements and the challenges faced by individuals caught in conflict zones. The Indian government continues to monitor the situation closely, prioritizing the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad.
