Young Cricketers Face Uncertainty at WPL Auction in India
The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as players prepared for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction held on December 16, 2023. The event generated excitement among state-level cricketers, each hoping for a chance to secure a coveted contract. For many, this was not just a game; it represented their aspirations and dreams.
Two weeks prior to the auction, on November 27, 2023, I had a unique opportunity to witness an Under-23 T20 match featuring a number of young female cricketers. The match took place on a school cricket ground in a north Indian city, where talented players competed for recognition and a potential future in professional cricket. Among them was a player referred to as M, known for her composure and classical batting style. Coaches and scouts from WPL teams praised her consistently, tracking her performance closely.
M’s team began strong, bolstered by a fast bowler who took two wickets in just two overs. Interestingly, this bowler chose not to enter the WPL auction, despite the high demand for quality fast bowlers in the league. Another standout player, S, showcased her skills as a spinner, skillfully deceiving batters with her variety of deliveries. The duo, along with their teammates P, a current member of the senior national squad, and D, who has also received national recognition, formed a formidable lineup. Despite the pressure, they maintained a calm exterior, though their coach—a former player—exhibited visible tension.
“It’s too much tension. I don’t think I can watch the auction,” she remarked, acknowledging the challenge of selecting from over 277 players when only 90 spots were available. The odds were daunting, with nearly 70% of hopefuls facing the prospect of leaving empty-handed.
The landscape of women’s cricket has improved significantly over recent years. Players now benefit from match fees that match those of their male counterparts, along with modern amenities such as air travel and luxury accommodations. Reflecting on her earlier experiences, the coach shared, “We made almost no money. We did it because we were addicted to the game.” The evolution of the sport has undoubtedly elevated the stakes for young players, who now aspire for financial security and visibility in their careers.
As the auction approached, the team gathered in their hotel, ready to witness the event unfold live on television. Amidst supportive banter, M chose to focus on her phone, stepping out of the room frequently, clearly aware of the weight of the moment. The players recognized the similarities in their journeys—many coming from modest backgrounds and often being the only female cricketers in their communities. They understood that the WPL represented not only financial opportunities but also a chance to learn from elite athletes.
When news broke that Jamaican all-rounder Chinelle Henry was purchased by the Delhi Capitals for ₹ 1.3 crore, excitement erupted among the players, who celebrated her success. As names of friends and peers were announced, the atmosphere shifted from jubilation to tension. When P’s name appeared on the screen, the room fell silent. Despite their hope, no bids came forth. “Unsold!” announced the auctioneer, leading to a wave of disappointment. P‘s eyes filled with tears, while S expressed frustration, questioning the teams’ decisions.
As the auction continued, the news that D was also not picked reached the group. Stepping outside for fresh air, D remained unfazed, stating, “Whether we got picked at this auction or not does not change the core of what we do.” Her determination echoed the sentiments of her teammates, who were committed to their craft regardless of the auction’s outcome.
M, who had received positive feedback regarding her prospects, faced the reality that her name was never called. By the end of the six-hour event, her disappointment was palpable. Yet, like their coach, these young athletes possess resilience. They understand that the game is not solely defined by one moment, and their passion will drive them forward.
As they return to the cricket field, M will continue to direct the game, S will remain energetic in her support, P will focus on her bowling, and D will take her position in the field. The journey of these players is just beginning, and with their determination and skill, the future of women’s cricket looks promising.
