Telangana Police and Yugantar Join Forces to Enhance LGBTQIA+ Support

The Women Safety Wing (WSW) of Telangana Police has formalized a partnership with Yugantar, a non-profit organization based in Bengaluru, to fortify support services for LGBTQIA+ individuals in the state. This collaboration, marked by a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to enhance the operational framework of the Pride Place Transgender Persons Protection Cell.
Charu Sinha, Additional Director General of Police for WSW, emphasized the significance of this partnership in promoting inclusive policing and holistic support for LGBTQIA+ communities. “This initiative represents a progressive step towards ensuring safety and well-being for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation,” she stated.
Under the terms of the MoU, the two entities will work together to deliver vital services, including crisis intervention, legal assistance, and mental health support. Furthermore, they will implement training programs for police personnel, aimed at fostering a more informed and sensitive approach when dealing with LGBTQIA+ issues. Public awareness campaigns will also be part of this initiative, focusing on education and outreach to reduce stigma and discrimination.
Yugantar will leverage its existing infrastructure and expertise through its Queer-Trans Wellness and Support Center located in Hyderabad. This center has been pivotal in providing resources and support to vulnerable individuals within the community. By combining efforts with the Telangana Police, Yugantar seeks to create a safer environment for LGBTQIA+ persons and ensure they have access to necessary resources.
As part of this collaboration, both organizations are committed to creating a framework that not only responds to crises but also empowers LGBTQIA+ individuals through education and community engagement. This partnership is expected to serve as a model for other regions, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in promoting social inclusion and human rights.
With this development, Telangana is taking significant strides toward addressing the needs of its diverse population, fostering a more equitable society for all. As initiatives like this gain momentum, they pave the way for broader acceptance and support for LGBTQIA+ individuals across India and beyond.
