Teachers Shape Lives with Unique Styles and Lasting Impact
Teachers play a vital role in shaping individuals, often leaving an indelible mark through their unique teaching styles and personal quirks. This article reflects on the memories of educators who not only imparted knowledge but also instilled values that resonate long after the lessons have ended.
Memorable Educators and Their Distinctive Approaches
One cannot forget the figures who guided us through our formative years. In my case, the first teacher who stands out is Sardar Kuldeep Singh, who taught English to my class in the eighth grade. He introduced us to the complexities of the language, often writing challenging spellings and complex sentences on the board, accompanied by his signature command, “About turn!” This phrase required us to face him for a series of questions, a process that was both engaging and intimidating. Although his methods sometimes included a cane for discipline, the knowledge imparted during those moments has remained with me.
Equally impactful was our drawing teacher, a man of significant stature and a fondness for initiating lessons with the phrase, “Peh’ laan ik beja ban’anana vey” (first, we must draw an irregular shape). His creative approach transformed simple lines into intricate figures, captivating students and fostering a love for art. His ability to make the process enjoyable left a lasting impression on those of us who struggled to keep up.
In the realm of science, Saif Saab commanded attention with his robust presence and booming voice. He consistently reminded us to prepare with his daily declaration, “Yaad kar ke aana, main kal iss chapter mein se sawaal puchhoonga” (come prepared; tomorrow I will ask questions from this chapter). Despite occasionally forgetting to follow through, his strict demeanor motivated many students to study diligently, reinforcing the importance of being prepared in life.
The Balance of Discipline and Care
The approach to discipline in the past was markedly different from today’s standards. In our educational environment, corporal punishment was commonplace, with the philosophy that “spare the rod, spoil the child” was frequently applied. Each teacher had their unique style of enforcing discipline. Our mathematics teacher would strike palms with a wooden ruler, chanting, “Danda peer hai vigde tigdeyan da” (the rod tames the wayward). In contrast, our Hindi teacher would use a softer tone while administering discipline, asking, “Sha’rm nahin aati sha’raarat karte hue?” (Aren’t you ashamed of doing mischief?). The physical correction was often coupled with genuine care, reflecting a commitment to both discipline and education.
The multifaceted nature of these educators illustrates a deep-seated commitment to their students. They combined strictness with nurturing, ensuring that while discipline was enforced, the essence of learning was never compromised. Such experiences have been summarized aptly by American author Guy Kawasaki, who stated, “If you have to put someone on a pedestal, put teachers. They are society’s heroes.”
Though the methods of instruction may have evolved, the core values taught by these educators—discipline, respect, and the joy of learning—continue to resonate. Their influence extends far beyond the classroom, shaping the character and outlook of students for years to come. The lessons learned from such teachers are enduring, outlasting any physical discomfort endured during the process of education.
