Study Reveals Optimal Walking Pace for Heart Health Benefits
A recent study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine on October 28, 2025, highlights that the pace of walking is crucial to health benefits, not just the number of steps taken. While achieving the widely recommended target of 10,000 steps daily is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, the study suggests that how individuals walk can significantly impact their heart health.
The research indicates that walking for longer, uninterrupted periods is more beneficial than accumulating the same number of steps through shorter, intermittent sessions. Participants who engaged in continuous walking for at least 15 minutes experienced markedly lower risks of heart disease and premature death. Specifically, those maintaining a steady pace for 15 minutes or more had an astonishing 0.8 percent mortality rate, with only 4.39 percent developing heart disease.
In stark contrast, individuals who walked for less than 5 minutes continuously faced a higher risk, with 4.36 percent of them succumbing to early death and 13.03 percent developing heart-related issues. These findings underscore the importance of not only aiming for step goals but also ensuring that walking sessions are sustained and consistent.
Reevaluating Walking Habits for Better Outcomes
The implications of this research suggest that even those who are relatively sedentary, taking fewer than 5,000 steps daily, can still see improvements in heart health by focusing on the duration of their walks. To optimize the benefits, it is crucial to maintain a steady pace rather than adopting a leisurely stroll. Aiming for a continuous walking pace of at least 10 to 15 minutes without interruptions is recommended for better cardiovascular outcomes.
This study serves as a reminder to reassess walking habits. Simply counting steps may not suffice; ensuring that walks are continuous and brisk can lead to substantial health benefits.
