Sri Krishna Rukmini Kalakshetra Calls for Bharat Ratna for Zubeen Garg
A live event held at the Sri Krishna Rukmini Kalakshetra complex in Kabuganj, just outside of Silchar, paid tribute to the legendary singer Zubeen Garg and his immense contributions to Indian music. The gathering called for Garg to be awarded the prestigious Bharat Ratna, along with local honors such as the Asom Baibhav and Asom Ratna.
The event featured a panel discussion hosted by Bidhan Sinha, Chairman of SKRK, with Shashi Kr. Sinha, MCS, joining as a co-speaker. Attendees explored Garg’s profound influence on Assamese culture, highlighting his ability to perform in multiple languages, including Assamese, Bishnupriya Manipuri, Bengali, and Hindi. His impressive repertoire boasts over 38,000 songs, illustrating his versatility and dedication to music.
In addition to the discussion, the programme proposed the establishment of a Zubeen Garg National Park in Khompal. This envisioned park would feature a life-size statue of Garg, a multi-storey community and recreation centre, and a tourist guest house as part of the planned Rukmini Nagar Rural Township that surrounds the Kalakshetra.
To further celebrate Garg’s legacy, the organisers announced plans for a seminar scheduled on November 18, coinciding with his birth anniversary. The event included a heartfelt flute performance by Uttam Kr. Sinha, serving as a musical tribute to the artist.
The recognition of Zubeen Garg’s contributions reflects the cultural significance he holds in the region and the aspirations of his fans and admirers to see him honored at the national level.
