Sikkim Commission for Women Strengthens Ties with State Officials

The newly appointed 12-member team of the Sikkim State Commission for Women, led by Chairperson Teny Doma Bhutia, conducted significant courtesy visits to key state officials in Gangtok on September 3. The primary objective of these visits was to foster collaboration with the Chief Secretary R. Telang and the Director General of Police Akshay Sachdeva, ensuring the Commission effectively safeguards women’s rights and promotes welfare initiatives across Sikkim.

During these meetings, the delegation discussed strategies to enhance the Commission’s engagement with law enforcement and administrative bodies. The focus was on ensuring prompt action on complaints, effective policy implementation, and raising awareness about women’s rights. The team emphasized the necessity of coordinated efforts among various departments to strengthen mechanisms related to safety, welfare, and empowerment of women throughout the state.

The Commission’s delegation comprised members including Sakun Rai, Moti Maya Subba, Junnu Chettri, Tashi Doma Tamang, Sunita Sunwar, Nirmala Bhujel, Palmu Sherpa, Ran Maya Tamang, Rupa Mangar, Nawamit Lepcha, Parbati Acharya, and Devika Bista. Their collective expertise is set to drive the Commission’s initiatives forward.

In addition to the meetings with the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, the delegation met with Normit Lepcha, Secretary-cum-Project Director of the Women, Child, Senior Citizen, and Divyangjan Welfare Department. This session focused on deliberating initiatives that could amplify support systems, improve outreach, and raise awareness about government programs available for women.

Chairperson Bhutia highlighted the importance of unified action and continuous collaboration among state officials to create a safer and more empowering environment for women in Sikkim. She stressed that these efforts are essential for addressing various challenges faced by women and ensuring their rights are upheld effectively.
