Prince Andrew Sells Sunninghill Park for £15 Million Amid Controversy
The former Duke of York, Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, reportedly sold the luxurious Sunninghill Park for £15 million, a decision that has drawn attention due to his ongoing controversies. This property, a wedding gift from Queen Elizabeth II, was sold through a trust structure established by the late monarch, allowing Andrew to benefit from the sale despite the mansion’s ties to the Crown Estate.
Sunninghill Park, a 12-bedroom mansion located in Berkshire, was originally part of the Crown Estate, which typically channels profits directly to the UK Treasury for public spending. After Andrew, along with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson and their daughters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, vacated the property for Royal Lodge, the mansion was sold privately.
In 2007, Andrew received an offer of £15 million from Timur Kulibayev, a billionaire and son-in-law of former Kazakh president Nursultan Nazarbayev. At that time, Andrew was acting as the UK’s international trade envoy and had established significant connections in Kazakhstan, which later came under scrutiny. Reports from the Daily Mail in 2016 alleged that he acted as a “private fixer” for Kazakh businesses, raising concerns about his dealings.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale was allocated to refurbishing the Royal Lodge, amounting to £7.5 million. This estate is crown-owned, and Andrew had been living there rent-free until the announcement on October 30, 2022, that his lease would be revoked.
The timing of this sale coincides with Andrew’s recent loss of royal titles and privileges. Following intense pressure regarding his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Andrew has faced significant public scrutiny. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing, particularly in relation to allegations made by Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual assault—a claim he settled privately.
King Charles has made it clear that there is no return for Andrew to public life, further emphasizing the royal family’s disapproval of his actions. The recent sale of Sunninghill Park illustrates the complicated legacy and financial decisions surrounding Andrew’s royal connections and the ongoing fallout from his past associations.
As the situation unfolds, the implications of this sale and Andrew’s future remain uncertain, but it is evident that the former prince’s standing has been irrevocably altered.
