Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the 100th birth anniversary of renowned singer and cultural icon Dr Bhupen Hazarika on March 8, 2024, in Guwahati, Assam. During the event, he unveiled a Rs 100 centenary commemorative coin and a book detailing Hazarika’s life, authored by prominent writer Anuradha Sarma Borpujari.

While addressing the attendees, PM Modi highlighted Hazarika’s enduring impact, stating, “Though he may not be present physically, his voice gives energy to people.” He affectionately referred to Hazarika as “Sudha Kontho,” expressing his personal connection to the late artist. “Just a few days ago, on September 8, I shared my feelings in an article dedicated to Bhupen da. It is my good fortune to participate in this event marking his birth centenary,” he added, as reported by the news agency ANI.

In his speech, PM Modi emphasized Hazarika’s contribution to the cultural fabric of India, stating, “His music embodies the principle of Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat; he was deeply rooted in our traditions.” He reflected on the challenges faced by the North East region in past decades, saying, “When the North East was neglected and engulfed in violence, Bhupen da gave voice to the unity of India. He dreamt of a prosperous North East and sang songs for Assam.”

The Prime Minister’s remarks underscored a commitment to realizing Hazarika’s vision for the region, as he stated, “Today, we are working day and night to fulfill his dreams for the North East.”

PM Modi’s visit to Guwahati is part of a two-day trip to Assam. He arrived at the Lokpriya Gopinath International Airport, where he was welcomed by state officials, including Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with his cabinet colleagues.

On the following day, PM Modi plans to visit Mangaldoi in Darrang district and the Numaligarh refinery in Golaghat. During these visits, he is set to inaugurate and lay the foundation for projects valued at over Rs 19,000 crore and will address public gatherings in both locations. This visit underscores the government’s focus on development initiatives aimed at fostering growth in the North East.
