NDRI Achieves Second Place in National Ranking for Dairy Research

The ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) has achieved the impressive distinction of securing second place in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025. This recognition, announced on **March 7, 2025**, falls under the ‘Agriculture and Allied’ category of the Union Ministry of Education. The award presentation took place during the India Rankings 2025 ceremony held in **New Delhi**, where Dr. Dheer Singh, the Director and Vice-Chancellor of NDRI, accepted the honor from **Dharmendra Pradhan**, the Union Minister for Education.
This ranking is determined based on several criteria outlined by the NIRF, including teaching and learning resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and peer perception. During the ceremony, Dr. Singh highlighted that NDRI has long been a leader in dairy research and education, significantly contributing to the advancement of the dairy industry in India over its century-long history.
Significant Contributions to Dairy Industry
NDRI is not only recognized for its educational excellence but also for its impactful research and innovative technologies. The institute has pioneered notable achievements, such as the world’s first buffalo cloning using a hand-guided technique, which has advanced elite dairy animal breeding. Dr. Singh emphasized that NDRI has developed over **80 technologies**, many of which have been commercialized, leading to enhanced dairy productivity and efficiency.
Its **Model Dairy Plant** is particularly noteworthy, processing more than **60,000 liters** of milk daily. Through initiatives like advanced breeding techniques, accurate milk yield predictions, and effective fertility management, NDRI has played a vital role in increasing milk production across the country. The institute’s innovations in areas such as synbiotic products, lactose-free beverages, and rapid contaminant detection have significantly improved milk quality and safety.
State-of-the-Art Facilities and Future Goals
NDRI is equipped with key facilities that support cutting-edge research, including the National Referral Laboratory for Milk Quality and Safety and the Climate Resilient Livestock Research Centre. These institutions focus on establishing high milk standards, ensuring safety, and adapting to climate challenges in dairy farming.
Dr. Singh further stated, “NDRI continues to play a vital role in strengthening India’s dairy sector.” He expressed gratitude to all staff members and students for their dedication and hard work, which contributed to this remarkable achievement. As NDRI moves forward, it aims to maintain its leadership status and continue its contribution to the dairy industry, further enhancing the quality and efficiency of dairy production in India.
