Merck Foundation Hosts First Ladies Initiative Summit 2025 in Gabon

The Merck Foundation held the 7th Edition of the First Ladies Initiative Summit (MFFLI) on March 15, 2025, in Gabon, bringing together First Ladies from multiple African nations. The summit, inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, Chairman of the Merck Foundation Board of Trustees, and Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation, featured H.E. Madam Zita Oligui Nguema, First Lady of Gabon, who serves as Ambassador of the Merck Foundation “More Than a Mother” initiative.

During the summit, Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej and Madam Zita Oligui Nguema announced collaborative efforts to provide scholarships for young doctors specializing in oncology and diabetes care. Senator Kelej emphasized the potential impact on Gabon’s public healthcare system, stating, “This is just the beginning of our efforts to transform the public healthcare landscape in the country.”

Madam Zita Oligui Nguema highlighted the significance of their partnership, which commenced in 2024, and noted that they have already begun enrolling local doctors in the scholarship program. She expressed her commitment to improving healthcare capacity in Gabon and mentioned the launch of an initiative called “Educating Linda.” This program aims to provide annual scholarships for 20 high-performing underprivileged girls, allowing them to complete their education.

The summit’s second day featured a committee meeting where First Ladies from various countries shared reports on the Merck Foundation’s programs and discussed future strategies. Senator Kelej noted that since its inception, the Merck Foundation has awarded over 2,280 scholarships to doctors from 52 countries, focusing on 44 underserved medical specialties.

Merck Foundation’s initiatives have also included a Health Media Training program aimed at equipping local media representatives to raise awareness on critical social issues, such as gender-based violence and women’s empowerment. Additionally, the foundation announced a call for applications for eight awards in partnership with the First Lady of Gabon. These awards will recognize contributions from media, musicians, fashion designers, and filmmakers, fostering talent in various fields.

Furthermore, the launch of seven children’s storybooks was announced. Titles such as “More Than a Mother” and “Educating Linda” address important social issues, including infertility stigma and the importance of education for girls. The books are available in French and aim to engage young readers in meaningful conversations.

The summit was streamed live on social media platforms, allowing for broader public engagement. The Merck Foundation continues to expand its reach, striving to create a significant impact in healthcare and education across Africa and other underserved communities.

Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej reiterated the foundation’s commitment to transforming healthcare, stating, “Merck Foundation has always believed in the importance of building healthcare capacity.” As the foundation progresses, it plans to enroll more doctors from Gabon in various medical specialties in collaboration with local health authorities.
