The Maharashtra government has officially renamed Aurangabad railway station to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar station, following a gazette notification issued on October 15, 2023. This change is part of a broader initiative to honour Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and to distance the city from its Mughal-era name, originally associated with Aurangzeb. The decision aligns with the previous renaming of Aurangabad city to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar earlier this year, reflecting heightened political activity in anticipation of upcoming local and civic body elections in Maharashtra.

The renaming initiative originates from the BJP-led Mahayuti government, although discussions began during the tenure of the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. The Aurangabad railway station, opened in 1900 by the 7th Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, is a key transport hub located on the Kacheguda-Manmad railway section under the Nanded division of the South Central Railway zone. It connects Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar with major destinations across India.

Historical Context and Cultural Significance

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is not only a vital logistical point but also an important tourist destination. The city is renowned for its proximity to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, as well as significant monuments like Bibi ka Maqbara and the Aurangabad Caves. Often referred to as the “City of Gates,” the district boasts a rich architectural heritage dating back to the Mughal era.

The push for renaming Aurangabad has historical roots dating back to the late 1980s, marked by tensions that culminated in communal riots in 1988, resulting in over 25 fatalities. During this period, the Shiv Sena gained control of the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation. On May 8, 1988, party leader Bal Thackeray publicly declared the intention to rename the city to ‘Sambhaji Nagar’. A formal resolution to this effect was passed in 1995, followed by public consultations.

In September 2023, the state government confirmed the district’s renaming to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar after approval from a special cabinet meeting.

Future Directions for Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

Recently, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis proclaimed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar as India’s future Electric Vehicle (EV) capital. He cited recent investments, including those from Hyundai, as indicative of the city’s growing appeal as an industrial destination. This bold assertion reflects the government’s vision for economic development in the region, coinciding with the city’s cultural and historical transformations.

With these changes, the Maharashtra government’s actions signify not only a shift in naming conventions but also a broader ambition for the city’s identity and economic future. As Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar evolves, it aims to blend its rich heritage with modern industrial growth, positioning itself as a significant player on the national stage.
