Konkani Welfare Association Celebrates Monthi Fest in Mumbai

The Konkani Welfare Association in Mumbai celebrated the Nativity feast of Mother Mary, also known as Monthi Fest, on September 13, 2023. The event took place at the Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, situated beside Sion station, drawing a large gathering of community members and dignitaries.

The celebration featured a special Mass led by chief guest Fr Shavito Corea, the Chancellor. He was accompanied by parish priests Fr Tony D’Souza, Fr Julius, Fr Salvador D’Souza, and Fr Aravind. During the service, attendees offered thanksgiving prayers, venerated Mother Mary, and received new paddy sheaves as blessings, symbolizing gratitude to Mother Nature.

Under the leadership of president Harry Siqueira, the event showcased the active participation of association members, including secretaries Denis D’Souza and Molly Siqueira, along with vice-president Flavy D’Souza and other members such as Dulcine Furtado, Rita Aranha, and Ryan D’Souza. The festive message was delivered by Leena Pinto, adding a personal touch to the proceedings.

The celebration was enriched by various cultural performances, including music, skits, and dances. The festive atmosphere was further elevated by the presence of special invitees such as Henry D’Souza, Paul D’Souza, and George Pinto. Former president Dulcine Furtado concluded the event by proposing the vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions of all involved.

Dignitaries in attendance included Satish Shetty, proprietor of Lakshmi Caterers, and retired Indian Navy officer Sampath Shetty. Leaders from the Kannada Sangha Sion, including president Praveen Bhat and treasurer Dayanand Moolya, were also present, enhancing the event’s community spirit.

The celebration concluded with a traditional meal prepared using the newly blessed paddy, arranged by the association members. This communal feast not only honored a cherished tradition but also strengthened bonds within the Konkani community in Mumbai. The Monthi Fest serves as a reminder of cultural heritage and the importance of togetherness, reflecting the vibrant spirit of the community.
