Karnataka Uncovers 85 Unpublished Inscriptions in Chikkamagaluru
The Department of Archaeology, Museums, and Heritage in Karnataka has announced the discovery of **85 unpublished inscriptions** in Chikkamagaluru district during the **2024-25 fiscal year**. This significant find is part of the ongoing efforts under the **Samrakshana** scheme, which aims to document and preserve historical artifacts across the state.
A Devaraju, the Commissioner of the department, shared that village-wise survey work is complete in **119 out of 238 taluks** in Karnataka. The remaining taluks are set to be surveyed in the **2025-26 fiscal year**. The initiative, first introduced in the **2020-21 state Budget**, seeks to systematically explore villages to uncover and protect their historical significance.
Survey Highlights and Contributions
The recent survey in Chikkamagaluru covered eight taluks, specifically **Tarikere, Ajjampura, Kadur, Narasimharajapura, Koppa, Sringeri, Mudigere,** and **Kalasa**. Notably, the taluk of Chikkamagaluru itself was excluded from this survey. Leading the survey was B P Rekha, Curator of the Government Museum in Madikeri, who emphasized the importance of these findings.
Among the 85 inscriptions, the texts for **10 inscriptions** from Ajjampura and Tarikere have already been prepared for publication. This advancement not only sheds light on the region’s rich history but also enhances the understanding of its cultural heritage.
The department expressed appreciation for the work of **H M Nagaraja Rao**, a Mysuru-based epigraphist responsible for preparing the inscription texts. Acknowledgment was also extended to the local communities, including villagers, Panchayat Development Officers, Grama Panchayat staff, and assistant B U Vinod Kumar, for their cooperation throughout the survey process.
Future Prospects
The discoveries made through the Samrakshana scheme highlight a growing commitment to preserving Karnataka’s historical legacy. As the Department of Archaeology, Museums, and Heritage continues its work, more valuable insights into the past are anticipated, further enriching the state’s cultural narrative.
This initiative not only enhances academic research opportunities but also fosters community engagement in heritage preservation. By documenting these inscriptions, Karnataka aims to ensure that its historical artifacts are recognized and preserved for future generations.
