At the ninth convocation of the Central University of Karnataka (CUK), held on March 15, 2024, retired Supreme Court Justice Dinesh Maheshwari delivered a keynote address focused on the importance of curiosity and unity as graduates prepare for new challenges. The ceremony took place at the university’s multi-purpose hall near Kadganchi village, close to Kalaburagi.

Addressing the assembled students, Justice Maheshwari emphasized that upon leaving university, individuals must embrace the uncertainties that lie ahead. “As soon as we come out of the universities, different challenges open up before us,” he stated. He encouraged the graduates to maintain their curiosity and to question the world around them, quoting Albert Einstein: “Questioning is not just questioning; that would be the standard to prove that human curiosity is still alive.”

Reflection and New Beginnings

Justice Maheshwari described the convocation as a moment of profound introspection, noting, “Some moments in life seem to stand still. It is the lifeline. The learning of the past and the desires of the future unite in one moment, before life again turns towards a new expansion.” He praised the graduates for their years of hard work, discipline, and perseverance, while reminding them that this occasion marks not an end, but the beginning of a new journey.

He used the myth of the churning of the ocean to illustrate the power of unity in overcoming challenges. “The churning of the sea between the suras and the asuras was initially full of ambition, conflict, and uncertainty,” he explained. “Out of this unrest emerged the precious Rasamrita that gave Amaratva (eternal life), symbolizing collective effort and unity.” Justice Maheshwari urged the graduates to remember their roots as they strive for new heights, stating that while roots provide stability, wings symbolize boundless opportunities.

Degrees Awarded and Future Aspirations

In total, 756 students received degrees at the convocation, including 471 master’s degrees, 256 bachelor’s degrees, 18 doctoral degrees, and one MPhil degree. Justice Maheshwari reminded the graduates that their certificates are merely a starting point, as new responsibilities and opportunities now rest on their shoulders.

CUK Chancellor Prof Battu Satyanarayana opened the ceremony, welcoming attendees and sharing a progress report on the university. The event also featured remarks from Dr Kota Saikrishna, the controller of examinations, who introduced Justice Maheshwari.

As the graduates celebrated their achievements, Justice Maheshwari’s message resonated: true success is rooted not only in personal ambition but also in collective effort and unity. His call for curiosity and compassion serves as a guiding principle for the new generation as they embark on their professional journeys.
