Indian Consulate in Seattle Opens New Chancery Premises

The new chancery premises of the Indian consulate in Seattle were officially inaugurated on March 15, 2024. The ceremony featured the Indian Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, and was attended by Washington State Governor Bob Ferguson. This development marks a significant milestone in enhancing the diplomatic relationship between India and the US, particularly in the Pacific Northwest region.

Governor Ferguson highlighted the inauguration as a landmark event that underscores the strengthening of bilateral ties. The establishment of the Indian consulate was announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2023, emphasizing the growing importance of Indian-American relations in the area. The consulate began operations from a temporary location shortly thereafter, indicating a swift commitment to serving the community.

Within a span of five months, the consulate reported that it had provided services to nearly 23,722 applicants from its jurisdiction, which includes the states of Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska. Prakash Gupta, the Consul General, noted the significance of these numbers, reflecting the needs of the Indian diaspora and the local community.

The inauguration ceremony included a brief interaction between Ambassador Kwatra and representatives from the Indian American community. During his visit, the ambassador also engaged with senior leaders from major technology companies in the Greater Seattle area.
