The Indian Army’s Spear Corps held a significant event to mark the 73rd Walong Day, honouring the soldiers who fought in the 1962 Battle of Walong. This two-day commemoration took place in Arunachal Pradesh on November 15 and 16, 2023, featuring a series of ceremonies that celebrated the bravery and sacrifice of those involved in one of the most pivotal moments of the conflict.
The event commenced on November 15 with a vibrant lineup of activities designed to engage and inform attendees about the historical significance of the Battle of Walong. The Defence Public Relations Officer (PRO) noted that the celebrations included a Light & Sound Show, a Drone Display, Sand Art installations, and various musical and cultural performances. These presentations not only showcased the artistic vibrance of the region but also narrated the heroic actions of the soldiers during the war.
On November 16, the formal proceedings began with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Walong War Memorial. This was followed by the inauguration of statues dedicated to the heroes of the Battle of Walong, ensuring that their legacy is preserved for future generations. Cultural presentations by local artists and members of the Indian Army added a traditional element to the occasion, reinforcing the community’s connection to its history.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including Lt Gen R C Tiwari, the Eastern Army Commander, Lt Gen VMB Krishnan, Quarter Master General, and Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar, General Officer Commanding of the Spear Corps. Shri Chowna Mein, the Deputy Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, was also present, along with numerous war veterans and their families.
According to the Defence PRO, the closing ceremony served as a tribute to the extraordinary valour, patriotism, and determination exhibited by the Indian Army during the 1962 conflict. The event highlighted the deep civil-military bond that characterizes the Walong region, celebrating not only the military achievements but also the communal spirit that supports such commemorations.
The Walong Day celebrations aimed to acknowledge the contributions of war veterans and inspire younger generations to appreciate and remember the sacrifices made by those who served. Through this commemoration, the Indian Army and the local community reaffirmed their commitment to honouring the past while fostering a sense of unity and resilience for the future.
