India Secures 2030 Commonwealth Games; Ahmedabad Named Host City
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India has been awarded the prestigious bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad designated as the host city. This significant announcement was made during the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) General Assembly held in Glasgow on November 26, 2025. Modi expressed his happiness through a post on X, emphasizing that this achievement places India firmly on the global sporting map.
The Prime Minister conveyed his congratulations to the people of India, stating, “With the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, we are eager to celebrate these historic games with great enthusiasm. We look forward to welcoming the world!” This sentiment reflects India’s commitment to fostering international sporting events and promoting unity through sports.
Organizing the Games and Sports Disciplines
The organizers of the Amdavad 2030 Games will collaborate with Commonwealth Sport and international federations to finalize a program of 15 to 17 sports. The recent Sport Programme Review will guide the selection process, with popular disciplines such as cricket (T20), shooting, hockey, wrestling, judo, rugby sevens, and 3×3 basketball under consideration. Additionally, organizers have the option to propose two new sports for inclusion in the event.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah attributed this achievement to Modi’s vision for transforming India into a global sports hotspot. In his post, Shah stated, “Congratulations to every citizen as India wins the prestigious bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad. This is a testament to PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s vision for turning our Bharat into a global sports hotspot.” He highlighted the decade-long efforts to develop world-class sports infrastructure in India, which have uplifted the nation’s potential through effective governance.
India’s Commonwealth Games History
India has a strong history in the Commonwealth Games, winning a total of 101 medals, including 38 gold medals, during the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi. A significant portion of these medals, 30, came from shooting events. In the most recent edition, the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, India secured 61 medals, including 22 gold. Notably, shooting was not included in the Birmingham edition, which limited India’s medal opportunities in that discipline.
Ahmedabad will become the second Indian city and the third city in Asia to host the Commonwealth Games, following New Delhi and the event’s history in Asia. The next Commonwealth Games are set to take place in Glasgow in 2026, building excitement for the upcoming events leading to 2030.
This announcement marks a significant milestone for Indian sports and showcases the country’s growing influence in international athletics. As preparations commence, the world will be watching how India embraces this opportunity to host a landmark event in its sporting history.
